Memorial Christian Church is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a religious body which originated in the early 1800s on the American frontier. It was the desire of the denomination's founders to bring Christian unity to the Body of Christ, restoring to the church the freedom and practices of early Christianity. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has approximately 800,000 members and is one of the largest Protestant bodies founded in this country.
In January of 1954, eighteen families began meeting at Memorial Christian Church. At that time, Midland was growing rapidly and the congregation of First Christian Church felt the need to establish a second congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the city. Meetings and worship services were held at West Elementary School while facilities were being erected at Andrews Highway and Cuthbert Street, then on the edge of the city.
Fifty years and two buildings later, Memorial Christian Church now finds itself in the heart of the city of Midland, a vital part of the lives of its membership and the community. Through the abundant blessings of God and the commitment of those called into God's service at Memorial, a nurturing and loving family in Jesus Christ has been founded at the corner of Andrews Highway and Cuthbert Street.
Like other congregations affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Memorial is self-governing. The congregation owns its property, calls its ministers, elects its officers and determines what financial support it will give to the denomination. Memorial operates through a church board (The Official Board) consisting of elected elders and deacons. Through various departments and ministry teams, all members of the congregation have the opportunity to share in the work of the church.
